Chanting and Mantras

What are Chanting and Mantras?

“Mantra is the language we use to connect to deities directly. It’s also known as true words, or the Universal words. Bodhisattvas and deities will receive us when we chant their particular mantra. It’s like transmitting energy directly to the deities. If we chant deities’ names, we are likely to pronounce them incorrectly.

The sounds of mantras, however, were taught by the Buddha and remain the same. When names are translated into another language, the pronunciation of them will likely be different, the pronunciation of them will likely be different, but mantras are just sounds.

No matter who chants the mantras to deities, it is pronounced the same way so that the deity will receive the chant. This is how mantras work.”  Grandmaster JinBodhi, “What Is Mantra?

Medicine Buddha’s Heart Mantra

Medicine Buddha is also known as Bhaiṣajyaguru. When we chant the Medicine Buddha’s Heart Mantra, if we can connect our ordinary human hearts with Medicine Buddha’s, we can obtain a blessing from him, a kind of protection and wish-granting.

How to get this blessing? Through sincere chanting. The more sincerity, the better. The mind must not wander. Sincerity counts more than purity and calm. Is there anyone who has something to pray for? Does anyone have issues you cannot solve yourself in your life? Or things you wish to have or to have some help?

Those wanting help, please raise your hand. I know I need help. I’m often dimwitted, and I need more money and talents to work with me. If you need help, please raise your hand again. I see some people’s hands are not raised. Is your life perfect already? Really? If you want help, you must be sincere. If you take chanting as a triviality, then it matters little if you chant or not. If you are not serious about it, you will get bored and tired.

But, if you chant sincerely, miracles start to happen.

The Six-Syllable Mantra

The Six Syllable Mantra is associated with Avalokitesvara. Comprising six characters,  sounds, or syllables, it is pronounced “”Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum.”

The Six-Syllable Mantra is a mantra that radiates illumination. It symbolizes that humans are one with Heaven and Earth.

Grandmaster JinBodhi teaches us how to visualize and chant six-syllable mantras. The illumination at the head represents wisdom, at the heart kindness and compassion. At reproductive organs, adherence to precepts, diligence, and lack of greed. The illumination of these three regions is extremely important. Then it would help if you visualized illumination extending to the limbs, especially the legs.

The most authentic method of chanting this mantras is that your body is illuminated entirely. Your body should be as transparent as the purest glass or diamond. Transparency means not tainted. Chanting The Six Syllable Mantra can more effectively elevate dharma power.

United States | Tina: Health and Academic Blessing

“After I chanted Guru Rinpoche’s Heart Mantra, my son was accepted into the ideal university, Stevens Institute Of Technology. He also received a scholarship from my husband’s company. He is full of happiness!

My 80-year-old father in China has a lung disease. His brain is not so clear. He was dizzy when he walked. He was hospitalized for more than a month and did not recover. He can only stay at home. I work abroad so I always put up a light offering and chant over the phone with my father, Guru Rinpoche’s Heart Mantra.

After a week, my father felt much better. After a month, my dad was able to get out and walk. He didn’t feel dizzy. I am grateful for the Master’s grace and blessings. I love you Grandmaster JinBodhi and am thankful.”

San Francisco | Kim: Knee Pain Dissipated

“Since The Greatest Gift Chanting Class, studying with a Grandmaster has helped me change my vices and understand how to get along with family and friends. I sprained my knee before the start of this Greatest Gift Chanting Class. Couldn’t bend my knees even when I was sleeping or going to the toilet, and I couldn’t move. The pain was unbearable, and I almost cried. I don’t know if I can recover.

Fortunately, chanting Bodhisattvas’s mantra with Grandmaster JinBodhi for two consecutive days after class started, the intense energy was able to make me immediately feel a tingling pain in my sprained knee, and the pain slowly drained from the sole of my foot. Two days later,

I felt a subtle Qi pulse, the pain disappeared, it was much easier to walk, and I felt relieved!

I am very grateful to Grandmaster JinBodhi and for the energy blessings of the Bodhisattvas.”

Melbourne | Zhan Biyuan: Crooked Fingers Straightened

“By learning The Greatest Gift Chanting Class, our whole family has received the most beautiful gift. A few days after The Greatest Gift Chanting Class, my husband also gradually started joining me. When the Grandmaster JinBodhi invited everyone to chant the Bodhisattvas, he would also sit and listen to the Master chant.

My husband worked as a policeman for thirty six years years. He worked in prison for five years and was in charge of the warden’s work. His job is always dangerous. Twenty years ago, due to a fight with knife wielding bandits on official duty, he was injured and injured the nerves in his hands. After treatment, the little finger of the middle finger is bent and can’t go back to normal. It lasts more than twenty years. After being bent, it still hurts to this day.

Unexpectedly, chanting with Grandmaster JinBodhi in class for a few days, a miracle happened on August 3rd! The middle finger can be straightened and is not too painful. He was very happy. This benefit is something we never expected. Doctors can do nothing for more than two decades. Thank you, Master, for the compassionate blessing!”

Since the death of my younger brother in 2008, for more than ten years, I have not been able to sleep well, insomnia has caused my emotional instability and disrupted my work! I am grateful for the most beautiful gift of Grandmaster JinBodhi and Bodhisattva.

How to Practice Chanting and Mantras

Picking the Right Time and Place for Chanting

For ordinary people, the environment is essential. One surrounding decides their character. Your parents and your surroundings are your teachers. You need to create a kind environment. If you think chanting is good, do it. Because if you believe something, take action, take the initiative, and influence others.

A quiet environment is the best for chanting. You can chant in the morning, afternoon, or night. If you get tired during a day in the office, try chanting for ten minutes. Don’t chant while working, you may get distracted. You can chant along with recording or chant quietly on your own. Before going to bed, you can also chant for an hour in a sitting meditation pose. It can eliminate fatigue, accumulated energy, and wisdom. The next day you feel motivated and full of energy. Chant when you have quiet time or need to stay refreshed.

The Correct Chanting Posture and How To Chant

Sitting is the main posture for chanting. For most of a chanting session, sit cross-legged. Whether to kneel will depend on your age and practice time. Kneeling may cause injuries, please proceed according to your own physical condition.

If you get sleepy when sitting, you can try kneeling instead. When you are tired of sitting, kneel. When you are tired of kneeling, sit. Both sitting and kneeling are good. After you finish chanting, get up, and do closing exercises. If you get cold during meditation, cover your legs with a blanket.

You can chant loudly depending on the surroundings. If it’s inappropriate, chant silently in your heart, but if you are practicing at home in a relaxed state and not causing inconvenience to others, it’s best to chant out loud.

The Right Mindset for Chanting

Before doing chants and mantras, you have to form the right mindset. When it comes to mantras or Buddha names, you must chant with reverence and respect while praising the bBuddhas. The mantras you chant reach the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas directly. Being compassionate, Buddha and Bodhisattvas will help you when you need it.

You must chat with gratitude and reverence. The more sincere you chant, the easier your prayer reaches Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. While doing chants and mantras, you must have gratitude and reverence to make buddhas and bodhisattvas happy. You will gain the most benefit when you are humble and respectful. When you come to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, you should always put yourself in a lower position.
